SUMMARY:The Development of Thulium and Holmium Fibre Sources
DESCRIPTION:\nHosted By: Fiber Modeling and Fabrication Technical Group\nAb
 stract:\nSources in the 1.9 - 2.1 um-spectral region are of interest for m
any applications including materials processing\, optical communications\,
LiDAR\, spectroscopy and various defence applications. Thulium and holmiu
m fibres are an efficient and powerful scalable gain media that can addres
s this spectral region. However\, there are several challenges to address
in order to realize this level of operation. In this webinar\, hosted by t
he OSA Fiber\, Modeling\, and Fabrication Technical Group. Dr. Nikita Sima
kov of Defence Science and Technology Group (DST) will present onthe devel
opment of efficient fibres\, waveguide designs in order to realize large-m
ode-area operation and non-linear mechanisms that arise from operating at
this wavelength. Nikita will provide a review of recent power scaling expe
riments in literature and at the DST group.\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat You Will Learn
:\n\n An appreciation of fibre compositions for achieving efficient opera
tion in thulium and holmium\n An&nbsp\;understanding of relevant waveguid
e and fibre designs for thulium and holmium fibres\n A review of non-line
ar effects that affects operation in this wavelength region\n A review of
power scaling experiments across the literature and at DST group in thuli
 um and holmium fibre sources\n\nWho Should Attend:\n\n Undergraduate\n G
raduate Students (Master's and PhD)\n Researchers (academics and industry
 )\n\nRegister Now\n\nAbout the presenter(s):\n\n\nNikita Simakov\, Defence
Science and Technology Group\n\n\n&nbsp\;In 2010\, Dr. Nikita Simakov joi
ned&nbsp\;Defence Science and Technology Group\, Australia where he specia
lizes in the scaling of thulium and mid-infrared laser sources. Nikita com
pleted his undergraduate studies at the University of Adelaide and postgra
duate studies at the University of Southampton. He has over 90 published p
apers and conference presentations on a ranging of topics including\, soli
 d-state sources\, nonlinear optics\, pulsed and CW lasers\, fibre lasers\,
fibre component fabrication\, and the power scaling of thulium and holmiu
 m fibre sources.\n\n\n\n
